Mini PV systems for private consumers: (The extra push) solar energy from the balcony

In view of continuously rising temperatures, the debate about climate change is also steadily increasing in Germany. Not least because of this, more and more consumers are looking into the use of renewable energies. Solar energy is increasingly becoming the focus of attention. The growing interest in photovoltaic systems for domestic use shows that consumers can do more for the environment than simply obtain their electricity from a green provider.

In addition to large-scale rooftop systems, small plug-in solutions that can be connected directly to the power grid are becoming increasingly popular. In this article, you will learn how these mini PV systems help to noticeably reduce electricity consumption in your own home and protect the environment in the process.

Mini PV systems: balcony power plants, balcony solar and their advantages

The advantages of the small solar power plants are obvious: the self-produced electricity with sufficient sunshine can be used directly in the household for personal use. Since the modern PV systems have a line of 150 to 600 watts, they can produce up to 600 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. Households can save up to 20% of their annual electricity consumption in this way. Acquisition costs in the three-digit euro range ensure that a plug-in system pays for itself after around seven to ten years.

In addition to the costs, the main arguments in favor of plug-in systems are their simple design and uncomplicated connection to the household power supply. Particularly interesting for tenants is that the space-saving modules can be just as easily uninstalled from the balcony or terrace in the event of a move. This makes them the ideal power generator for private consumers who are interested in the environmentally friendly generation of green electricity for their own use.

Requirements for your own PV system

In the meantime, a large number of offers for small solar devices can be found on the Internet, most of which are in the three-digit euro range. They usually include one or two standard solar modules as well as a mounting kit for roof, wall or balcony. In addition, an integrated inverter is required to convert the solar power into 230 volts for the feed-in, as well as a connection cable with plug. Thanks to their plug-and-play system, the small PV systems can be connected to the household grid without much effort.

Before commissioning one’s own solar power plant, some legal hurdles must be overcome. Just like larger PV systems, the mini solar systems permitted since 2018 also fall under the Renewable Energy Sources Act. Therefore, the plug-in capable PV models have to be registered with the Federal Network Agency as well as with the responsible network operator due to the Low Voltage Connection Ordinance. It is important to note that the systems must not exceed a feed-in power of 600 watts. For tenants, it is also necessary to obtain the approval of their landlord before installation. For apartment owners, they may need the approval of the homeowners‘ association. There are also a number of important details to consider before and during installation.

Balcony power plant, an interesting new and young market

Due to the space-saving and handy attachment of the modules to the balcony, thanks to simple plug & play assembly in comparison, a gate opens here for a still young and untapped market. In 2020, there were about 58.67 million people in the German-speaking population with a balcony or terrace.

Balcony solar and balcony power plants Market development: mini PV systems

How is the solar energy market developing? Where is new potential emerging? Xpert.Digital is active not only in technical solutions for photovoltaics and logistics, but also in the field of in-depth research. Among other things, AI is used for this purpose. For a few topics, we publish the latest developments at irregular intervals. The outcome is mostly dependent on many parameters and decisions. In general, however, the course can be predicted if no further serious influences occur in the planned decisions and developments:

Balcony power plant with storage - the optional power storage

Regardless of whether devices for indoor or outdoor use provide energy, it is true that the excess electricity theoretically flows back into the general power circuit if no electricity storage is available. However, since these quantities are very small and are not provided on a permanent basis, it is usually not worthwhile to arrange a feed-in tariff with the electricity supplier.

Instead, the integration of an additional electricity storage system brings further advantages. It means that the solar energy generated during the day can be used to build up reserves for times when the sun is not shining or for the night hours. In this way, users of their own balcony solar system only have to purchase the electricity they need from the grid operator during times when there is no sunlight. In this way, they save money month after month and can at the same time contribute their share to the energy transition.

Balcony power station 600W and more

More than 600 watts may not have a balcony power plant, if you do the installation without an electrician. Since the end of April 2019, an electrician is also not required to register your own balcony power plant with the current electricity provider. For more info, simply ask the respective electricity provider for the house network. Usually, there is already a separate online registration for such mini PV systems for this purpose.
